Mendes Internal Door Treatment & Installation Guidelines

🛡️ Please Read Before Fitting or Altering

Timber is a natural material and variations in colour, grain and texture are normal. It is therefore essential that any questions are raised prior to commencement of works — not after the door has been hung.

Any work carried out on a door constitutes acceptance. Once a door has been fitted or altered, returns will not be accepted.

🪵 Preparing Your Door for Installation

The most common cause of door failure is uneven expansion or contraction of the door components. This movement is caused by changes in moisture levels.

To prevent this, all doors must be fully sealed before installation, including all faces, edges and cut-outs.

  • If trimming is required, the door must be reduced equally from both sides.
  • Maximum trimming:
    • Up to 6mm per side for doors with lippings of 10mm or more
    • Up to 3mm per side for doors with 6mm lippings
  • Excessive trimming may expose the engineered core, which must then be sealed or re-lipped.
  • Avoid fitting locks or latches at rail or glazing bar joints as this will weaken the door.
  • Three hinges are recommended to provide rigidity and long-term stability.

🔥 Fire Door Installation (FD30)

FD30 fire-rated doors must be installed strictly in accordance with the relevant fire certificate.

It is the responsibility of the installer to ensure intumescent strips or seals are fitted to the door, frame or lining as specified.

🎨 Finishing & Sealing (Warranty Critical)

  • Untreated doors must be fully sealed prior to hanging, including:
    • Top and bottom edges
    • Hinge recesses
    • Lock, handle and latch cut-outs
    • Any drilled or exposed timber
  • Waxes and oils are NOT suitable sealing products and will invalidate the warranty if used.
  • Do not use water-based sealants excessively, as they may penetrate the veneer and cause bubbling.
  • Primed or part-finished doors must be re-sealed wherever timber is exposed.
  • Lightly sand, de-nib and clean surfaces before initial sealing and before final coats.

👷 Professional Installation Notice

If you are instructing a professional installer, decorator or joiner, you must ensure they are fully aware of and comply with these manufacturer guidelines.

Failure to correctly seal faces, edges or cut-outs will result in the warranty being void.
