Door Ironmongery Explained – Handles, Hinges, Locks & More

Door ironmongery refers to the functional hardware fitted to internal and external doors, including handles, hinges, locks, latches and accessories. Each component plays a specific role in how a door operates, how secure it is, and how it looks within a space.

Door handles and Door knobs are the most visible elements and are available for internal and external use in a wide range of styles and finishes. Internal door handles are commonly paired with tubular latches or bathroom locks, while external door handles are designed to work with multi-point locks or deadlocks for added security.

Door hinges support the weight of the door and allow it to open and close smoothly. Ball bearing hinges are ideal for heavier or frequently used doors, while fire-rated hinges are required when fitting FD30 or FD60 fire doors. Parliament hinges are often used where doors need to open fully back against a wall.

Locks and latches control privacy and security. Tubular latches are typically used on standard internal doors, bathroom locks provide privacy for WCs and en-suites, and sash locks or deadlocks are commonly fitted to external doors and high-security internal doors.
